On Tuesday February 4 2020 the Petersburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen appointed Michael Hartung of 302 College St to fill a vacancy on the board. That vacancy is set to expire in August of 2022.
Aldermen Jessica Moore, James Lyell and Kenneth Richardson cast the votes to appoint Mr Hartung.
According to the Petersburg Town Charter, there are two requirements to be an alderman in the Town of Petersburg. 1) Reside inside the corporate limits. 2) Be a registered voter.
On Wednesday February 5 2020 the Lincoln County Election Commission confirmed that Mr Hartung was NOT a registered voter in the Town of Petersburg.
Upon further investigation by the Petersburg Observer, over 44 pages of criminal history has been uncovered concerning Mr Hartung including a 2009 Class E Felony conviction in Bedford County TN. A phone call to the Bedford County criminal court clerk's office confirmed that this felony conviction remains on Mr Hartung's record. Additionally, a call to the Bedford County Election Commission confirmed that Mr Hartung was purged from the Bedford County voter rolls in 2009 due to that same Class E felony conviction.
Ms Moore, Mr Lyell and Mr Richardson all cast a vote for someone neither one of them knew anything about when in fact Mr Hartung is NOT eligible to serve as an alderman.
